Operation Safe Speeds last Thursday involved all states and territories taking part in reducing speed-related offending across the country.
Operation Lomaini was held the following Friday which targeted compliance, road-worthiness, drink driving, seatbelts and distracted drivers, including the use of mobile devices.
Over the two day Territory traffic campaign:
• 1378 motorists were breath tested
• 27 drink/drug drivers were removed from our roads
• 520 motorists were issued traffic infringements
• 2 vehicles were impounded for hooning
“The festive season should be the time of year you spend with your loved ones, not the time to be hospitalised or worse because of poor driving behaviour,” police said.
• If you have been drinking or taking drugs – do not drive.
• All phone calls, texts and notifications can wait.
• Wear your seatbelt.
• Do not speed – that minute you think you’ll save is not worth it.
• Be patient, the roads are not a racetrack and delays happen.
• If you are driving, nothing else is as important as getting yourself and your passengers to where you need to be safely.
There will be an increased police presence conducting traffic enforcement duties on the roads over the next few weeks.
