The train, built in 1892, was given a fresh coat of paint today, ahead of plans to move it to the old train station on Railway Terrace.
A Katherine National Trust spokeswoman said the move has been a long time coming, with the first plans being put forward five years ago.
She said once the train is moved to Railway Terrace, it will be part of a broader redevelopment aimed at bringing tourists and families to the historic locomotive.
This includes extending the old station's fence to surround the train because it has previously been a target for vandals.
The spokeswoman said it will tie in with other developments in the town to bring activity to the CBD.
"Especially with fifty-cent park (Town Square) being rejuvenated, we're in a good spot," she said.
Only the front of the train and one trailer will be moved to the old station, with the remaining trailer donated to the Katherine Museum which plan to use it as a performance stage.
The idea first came about in 2015 when Friends of the North Australia Railway called for a much-needed restoration.
The train was built in the late 19th century and played a role in the NT contribution to World War Two.
