Northern Territory Police have charged a 19-year-old male following a vehicle pursuit in the early hours of this morning.

Around 3.30am police received a report of a suspicious vehicle breaking into houses in Bayview in Darwin.

Upon police arrival, the vehicle is alleged to have driven from the area at speed.

The vehicle was located on Tiger Brennan Drive and police commenced a pursuit.

It is alleged the driver of the vehicle drove on the opposite side of the road and threw lit fireworks at pursuing police vehicles.

Fireworks can be purchased legally in the NT for use on only one day of the year, Territory Day on July 1.

They cannot be used at any other time of the year.

Police claim the speeding vehicle then drove up an embankment near Ross Graham Bridge and came to a stop and the two occupants attempted to flee police on foot.

The male driver and his 15-year-old female passenger were arrested at the scene with the female being released from custody shortly after.

During the arrest, police allege the male resisted police and assaulted a police officer.

The police officer received minor bruising and did not require medical treatment.
