The many CCTV cameras in Katherine’s CBD are monitored and recorded by police.
Police yesterday responded to criticism from town traders about the use of the cameras as a tool in preventing regular weekend break-ins in the CBD.
The cameras are located along the median strip in Katherine Terrace with a limited number in other side streets.
There are plans to install even more of the cameras as part of a coming $5m investment in the CBD.
The Katherine Sports and Family Chiropractic Care’s Phillip Jazyschyn questioned the worth of the cameras after a window was smashed at his business last weekend.
Mr Jazyschyn said he had asked police whether the cameras were being monitored.
Commander Michael Hebb yesterday said CCTV operators within the Joint Emergency Services Communications Centre in Darwin monitor footage from the CCTV network across the NT, including those within Katherine.
“Additionally, CCTV footage is recorded, and is reviewed as an avenue of enquiry for investigations undertaken by police,” Commander Hebb said.
