The departmental office of the Prime Minister in Katherine is the worst culprit in town in terms of the “look” of Katherine.
CBD shopkeepers said yesterday owners and tenants needed to do their upmost to present their shops and businesses in the best possible condition.
They have been called on to show pride in Katherine for locals and visitors.
The departmental office of Prime Minister and Cabinet (Indigenous Affairs) in Katherine Terrace has a line of broken windows.
Even a police sticker on one of the windows indicates it was broken back in early October last year, and has not been repaired.
An investigation by the Katherine Times today revealed the shopfront, tenanted by the Prime Minister’s departmental office is easily the worst presented in town.
We have reported this week of the costly efforts being made by shopkeepers to counter a crime wave which has seen many shop windows and doors broken.
Many are installing expensive grilles and even roller screens to try and thwart vandals and thieves.
People have also commented on how the increased security is changing “the look” of Katherine – as a town behind bars.
“It is an ugly look for tourists to see,” one resident said today.
“One look at the main street and they are going to know something is badly wrong here.”
Despite repeated efforts already, the Katherine Times will continue to press for an answer on when the office windows are to be repaired.
While Mr Morrison’s office said it was preparing a response, it has indicated it is only a tenant of the building and it was up to the landlord to fix the windows.
