Many people came out to see the loaded train pass outside town in February and now its on its way back from South Australia.
The special train movement carrying Australian Defence military equipment has already started its return trip to Darwin from Port Augusta in South Australia.
Loaded with military transports, the movement of up to 20 flat-top wagons will arrive at the Berrimah rail yards late tomorrow, which means it is likely to pass through Katherine as well tomorrow.
The return journey marks a milestone for rail operator, Genesee & Wyoming Australia (GWA), completing a 2-way round trip on the Adelaide to Darwin rail line - the first time in years this infrastructure has been used for a major movement of Australian defence equipment.
GWA operates nearly 5000km of track in South Australia and the Northern Territory, including the 2200‐km Tarcoola‐to‐Darwin railway.
GWA's chief executive officer, Luke Anderson, said: "This project has demonstrated GWA's strong capabilities in large-scale logistics solutions compared to the number of road vehicles that would have otherwise had to be assigned for this exercise. This provides a safer and with less emissions, a more environmentally friendly solution," Mr Anderson said.
"It is hopefully the forerunner to further such northern Australia rail opportunities between the Department of Defence (Australia) and GWA."
