Mr Chalker will take on the Chief Commissioner's role after a three year stint as the chief executive officer of the NT's Department of Housing and Community Development.
Before that he had been a member of the NT police for 23 years, rising to the position of assistant Commissioner.
Mr Chalker will take over the role vacated by Reece Kershaw who took on the job as commissioner of the Australian Federal Police.

The official announcement of Mr Chalker's new position is expected later in the week, according to News Limited today.
According to a recent government career description, Mr Chalker spent more than half of this policing career based outside of Darwin which included general duties, remote policing, criminal investigation and senior executive management roles.
