The original charge of recklessly endangering life has been upgraded following the elderly man's death.
The 73-year-old was hospitalised after allegedly being assaulted on Monday night.
Police were told of the alleged assault on Monday night after the older man was taken to Katherine Hospital with serious injuries.
The report was made to police at 11.30 on Monday.
Detectives from Northern Investigation Section and general duty members conducted investigations resulting in the arrest of the 70-year-old man.
He was taken to the Katherine Watch House.
Detectives from Northern Investigation Section are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
