It was drug detector dog Astra who sniffed out seven taped packages of cannabis hidden in a car's cargo space, police have alleged.
Police arrested a 27-year-old man and 34-year-old woman after a traffic stop on Oenpelli Rod, Jabiru at 2.40am yesterday.
The 27-year-old driver was subjected to a drug saliva test which which police allege returned a positive result. He was then arrested for a drug analysis.
Astra was deployed to search their vehicle and allegedly located the seven packages of cannabis.
Police said a further package of cannabis was located in the 34-year-old woman's handbag. Police seized the cannabis which weighed 672 grams in total.
Early morning raids are producing big results for police with a random breath testing station set up at Jabiru between 1.30am and 5.30am on Saturday.
The 27-year-old man later tested positive for amphetamine.
He was charged with:
- possess schedule 2 dangerous drug - commercial quantity
- supply schedule 2 dangerous drug - commercial quantity
- drive with prohibited drug in body
- drive with child unrestrained
- drive with child in load space.
He will appear before Darwin Local Court today.
The woman was charged with:
- possess schedule 2 dangerous drug - commercial quantity
- supply schedule 2 dangerous drug - commercial quantity
- adult passenger fail to wear seatbelt.
She will appear before Maningrida Local Court on September 1.
