Numerous short and medium length walking tracks make for interesting and moderately challenging days in the bush, and following them will get you to many beautiful spots far from the crowds.

It is very important when out and about in the NT environment to take safety seriously - remember a few essential safety tips.

We all know that we usually need at least two litres of water to get us through a normal day.

Our requirements go up dramatically however when we are out and about, particularly in the heat. 

Always take at least three litres of water per person with you on a hike.

At times it is possible to source water from the creeks and rivers around you however these are often ephemeral in nature and can be home to saltwater crocodiles.

Make sure you pack sufficient food for the day, hunger can lead to tiredness and poor decision making particularly on hot days.

Be sun smart - there is nothing more dangerous than walking in the bush wearing inadequate clothing and without a hat.

Remember what the sun doesn’t hit, the sun doesn’t hurt.

Make sure that you are self sufficient with regards to basic first aid. It can often take a few hours to get help so a hiking first aid kit and first aid courses are a great investment.

Before you head out check for the location of any emergency call devices along the way, these will be indicated on the Parks fact sheet and remember you will not necessarily be within mobile phone range.

Make sure that you tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back – a family member, a friend or a neighbour.

Take a map, read the signs, follow the track markers, they will all ensure that you get to your destination and back safely.

One last thing to remember:  walk with a buddy.

Taking a mate with you on a hike will help to ensure that you both get back safely.

A buddy can help if plans do not run smoothly and sharing the experience can make a hike even more memorable.
