The funding is part of the $5 million Remote Sport Infrastructure Program.
Acting Minister for Tourism and Culture, Eva Lawler said Territorians in remote communities loved their sport.
“Elliott deserves to have an accessible oval that encourages broad active participation,” Ms Lawler said.
“It’s important that the Elliott community is provided appropriate access to sporting facilities. We’ve seen the likes of current Port Adelaide football club AFL player Jake Neade, who comes from Elliott, become a great role model for other young players.
“We will work closely with the Council, who have surveyed a new central location, to develop the project scope.”
Member for Barkly, Gerry McCarthy said the benefits of sport extend beyond health and wellbeing.
“This new oval will bring community groups together to foster positive social relationships, creating stronger and more connected communities.”
Barkly Regional Council CEO, Steve Moore said the site was selected after extensive community consultation with residents.
“Members of the community are keen on the new site for football games,” Mr Moore said.
“The oval will be used for AFL games encouraging users from Elliott, Newcastle Waters and potentially Tennant Creek to visit and play in the region.”
Works are expected to begin once the scope is finalised and tender released. During this period, Council contractors will start clearing the site and installing the perimeter fence.
