The new program, announced by Chief Minister Michael Gunner and Minister for Housing and Community Development Gerry McCarthy today, follows the $69 million Stimulus announced in February.
This program saw work carried out at more than 3000 homes by around 220 contractors across the NT, providing a boost to local tradies this year.
It was revealed earlier this year there is a four year waiting list for public housing in Katherine.
For some people in Katherine, the waiting period is six years.
The government building program saw more than 250 vacant properties returned to public housing stock as part of a plan to increase housing, support Territory business and create jobs.
The new $100 million program will continue to deliver major and minor works to urban public housing properties across the NT including construction, plumbing, electrical, painting, roofing, fencing and security installations.
Renovation and maintenance works are expected to improve living conditions and increase the life span of housing stock by around 20 years.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner said it was a $100 million shot in the arm for our construction industry – particularly local tradies and contractors in the lead up to the traditionally quiet Christmas period.
“My number one priority is to create local jobs and this is a $100 million immediate job-creating stimulus package to help keep our local tradies in work and help subcontractors keep workers employed.”
