Police have just brought down two extra mobile trailers fitted with CCTV cameras to “assist us”.
There is already a mobile camera more or less on permanent sentry duty at the Woolworth’s car park.
More CCTV cameras have already been installed along the Stuart and Victoria highways.
The initial plans for the $5 million upgrade of Katherine’s CBD also include plans for more CCTV cameras.
There are already a number of the cameras already installed and operation along Katherine Terrace and First Street.
The shopping centre also recently installed some more cameras.
The cameras are monitored from the Peter McAulay Centre in Darwin.
Katherine shopkeepers, plagued with theft, have questioned the worth of the cameras as a crime deterrent.
Acting Superintendent Craig Garland today said two extra trailers “have been bought down from Darwin to assist us”.
“They will be placed in various locations that are identified by intelligence to detect and deter crime.
“Their mobility means that police are able to move them to identified hot spots allowing us to have the greatest effect on deterring crime.”
