Entries are now open for the 44th Katherine Prize, which celebrates Katherine's diverse and artistically living community.
Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre's director Poppy Searle said the addition of a youth award night one week prior to the opening night "emphasised a certain status for the artists of the future".
"Young people in Katherine can sometimes get a bit of a bad rep, but something they really excel in is sport and art, and we are hoping this shines a positive light on those aspects.
"The youth here are incredibly creative, and it is important for us to encourage that as well as provide a platform for them."
The Katherine Prize is considered to be the longest running art award in the Northern Territory.
Presented in a range of venues and formats over its long history, the awards are open to anyone who has been a resident of the Territory for at least 12 months.
"There are two really important things about the award," Mrs Searle said.
"It really celebrates the oldest continuous art prize and while it is open to a wide array of people it celebrates the talent in Katherine and provides a great opportunity for people to put their artwork out there."
Last year saw hundreds of people attend the opening at the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre, where the top prize was awarded to Michelle Hawkins' "powerful" charcoal portrait of a young Indigenous women.
The winning artist will receive a prize of $5000, as part of the Brian and Jeannette Lambert Award.
The Katherine Town Council also provides a $2000 prize and three cash prizes will be awarded to the youth division.
Entry forms must be submitted by Friday, July 5.
Artists are to deliver works between Tuesday, July 9 and Saturday, July 13 before the opening night on Thursday, July 25 - 6pm to 8pm.
