Last night’s announcement of the 43rd Katherine Prize winners attracted about 200 people to celebrate art from across the Top End.
“This opening is a celebration of Katherine’s diverse and artistically living community,” Godinymayin Centre curator Clare Armitage said.
“We have a really amazing commitment to local arts and culture,” she said.
Funded by the Katherine Town Council for the past 43 years, Ms Armitage said the art prize is an important event for the town.
The artworks were judged by the curator of Australian art at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Dr Wendy Garden and Katherine Regional Arts executive officer Jacinta Mooney.
Ms Mooney said the winning art work was chosen for its “technical brilliance”.
“Its strong subject matter demonstrates the power of a young woman, it really captures the look of strength,” she said.
The Katherine Town Council Award of $2000 went to Alan Joshua from Ngukurr.
