In total, 18 teams and 199 people took part in the event, the goal of which is to fundraise for the fight against cancer while celebrating survivors and remembering those who lost their fights.
As the sun set over the Katherine Sports and Recreation Club, cancer survivors and their carers set off on an emotional first lap of the field, before being joined by other team members.
Cancer Council NT chief executive officer Kathy Sadler praised the community for its support of the event and said the previous Katherine Relay for Life record of $28,000 had been beaten.
“As of 5pm on Monday, $28,510 had been raised, with some teams still to bank their money,” she explained.
“The event definitely exceeded our expectations.
“We were warmly welcomed and actively engaged by the Katherine community.”
