IT WAS a proud and momentous day on February 27 with the official opening of the Cancer Council NT’s new office in Katherine.
The establishment of the local cancer support service was two years in the making, and made possible thanks to the joint efforts of several community groups, local businesses, and the Northern Territory government.
An incredible $48,000 raised from last year’s Triple-0 Ball directly contributed to the new office and the employment of a part-time staff member.
Cancer Council NT chief executive officer Kathy Sadler gave special thanks to the Bendigo Community Bank and the Rotary Club of Katherine for their support, and said the new office would not have been possible without them.
Member for Katherine Willem Westra van Holthe cut the ribbon at the opening and said the establishment of the office was a true community effort and a credit to the town.
Health Minister John Elferink also commented that the additional service would provide social and emotional support for local cancer patients and their families.
