You have to look hard to find Katherine in the NT Government’s latest tourism campaign.
The campaign ‘Summer Well Spent’ hopes to attract more visitors to the NT over what is traditionally the slower wet season.
Launching the campaign on the weekend, Tourism and Culture Minister Lauren Moss said it was important to keep the NT front of mind for Australian travellers planning their summer holidays.
A Nitmiluk Tours spokeswoman said they were not worried about being sidelined in the NT Government’s latest tourism campaign.
“Tourism NT will focus on those major draw cards like Kakadu and Uluru. We are involved in other smaller campaigns throughout the year,” a Nitmiluk Tours spokeswoman said.
“It is not something we are mad or upset about.”
The council owned Visitor Information Centre did not want to comment.
The campaign website highlights holiday deals, videos, regional maps, itineraries and activities in Darwin, Kakadu and Alice Springs.
While other attractions like Uluru, Kakadu and Darwin appear on the home page, it takes some skill to navigate to the first mention of Katherine, in the Self Drive Adventures tab.
The NT Government has as yet failed to explain why Katherine has been downplayed in the campaign.
Katherine Times has contacted the department of tourism numerous times today but they are yet to respond.
There is little mention of Nitmiluk Gorge, which in 2016 attracted more visitors than Kakadu.
Parks visitation numbers for the year ended June 2016 were Kakadu 178,899, Nitmiluk 261,283.
