Chief Minister Michael Gunner today announced the Government will allow the development of onshore shale gas industry.
The decision for a moritorium placed over the industry for the past year has been lifted.
A large number of recommendations from a scientific panel are now being implemented and pre-exploration should be ready to go by the end of the year.
Mr Gunner said his Government had kept its promise to the community and strict new laws and regulations will be put in place.
Government experts today said they believed gas companies will first target the Beetaloo Basin, located south of Katherine.
