National Road Safety Week kicks off on April 30 and these tragic events have highlighted the importance of working ‘Towards Zero’ deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
On average 48 people, die and over 540 people are seriously injured on NT roads each year.
National Road Safety Week provides an opportunity for everyone to show that these deaths are preventable.
Road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
The NT Government will work with its partners and the community to create a safer transport system where no one is killed or seriously injured.
Police are placing ‘Towards Zero’ signs across the Territory in locations where 125 people lost their lives on our roads over the past 3 years (2015-17).
These signs not only honour those lives lost but also serve as a reminder for us all to drive to the conditions so others survive.
Everyone can support the cause by wearing a yellow ribbon, displaying a yellow ribbon on your car, adding a ribbon to your social media profile or making a pledge online.
Every serious crash has ongoing and devastating effects on our families and communities.
Many families across our community have been touched by these losses and sadly, many of these crashes could have been prevented.
Over the next five years, Government will be addressing actions from the Toward Zero Action Plan relating to the 11 key priority areas, and consider further actions that are aimed at bringing us towards our goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on NT roads.
Together, our goal is zero.
