East Side AFL team is leading the charge in Katherine’s first ever women’s competition.
More than 70 girls and women have been taking part in tough weekly training sessions to compete in the NT Worksafe Big Rivers Football League.
Katherine regional development manager, Julie Hunter said although the competition is in its early days, the four Katherine teams are putting on a good game.
“This year is the first competition,” Ms Hunter said.
“The focus is on participation and getting girls out and playing.
“We have had four rounds so far, with really good engagement.”
Ms Hunter said it is the weekly games and training sessions that are keeping the women playing each week.
She said the competition is designed to accommodate and encourage players of all skills.
“We have a few girls from NT AFL playing.
“And the rest are made up with girls who have either played just a couple of times or played in school.
“It is a real combo, each team has a good mix of experienced players and players new to the game.”
The games are played back to back with the men’s competition on Saturdays in Katherine.
With four games left in the competition before the grand final on September 15, heat is building to see who will take the title.
The next game is on Saturday, July 28.
