
A car crash on the Roper Highway has left one dead and another suffering serious injuries.
The lack of mobile phone coverage in the area appears to have delayed a call to emergency services for hours.
Police and Katherine’s St John Ambulance paramedics say they were called to the scene of the single vehicle rollover last night just before 7.30.
A ute, with two occupants, had rolled their car at around 4.30pm, but a call to 000 was delayed due to the lack of mobile phone coverage in the area.
One of the occupants lost his life in the rollover, and the other traveler was taken to Katherine Hospital in the care of St John Ambulance paramedics.
Paramedics had to travel nearly 300km to attend the fatal crash.
The second man only suffered minor injuries and arrived at the hospital in a stable condition.
Katherine paramedics were joined by Mataranka Clinic staff and CareFlight to attend to the scene 55km from the Stuart Highway, past the Jilkmingan turn off.
Major Crash Investigations will investigate the circumstances surrounding the cause of the crash.
