Police claim the man was travelling by bus from Mount Isa with a load of 14 “goon” casks of wine.
They allege it was the second time he had been found trying to smuggle grog into the NT after an earlier attempt ended in a car crash.
The man was located by police in Tennant Creek around 4am last Thursday.
Police allege he was found to be in the possession of 14 casks of 4.4 litre wine which police believe he intended to sell.
The liquor was destroyed.
The man was also arrested in relation to a crash which occurred on the Barkly Highway on May 4 during another alleged attempted grog run.
The car was significantly damaged and the male left the scene.
Police say 24 casks of 4.4 litre wine were located hidden in the surrounding area and subsequently destroyed by police.
He was charged with:
- Unlawful use of motor vehicle
- Drive while unlicensed
- Fail to report a crash
- Sell liquor without a licence
He was bailed to appear at Tennant Creek Local Court on September 18.
Police would like to thank members of the public for their continued support in reporting grog running in the NT.
Anyone with information on grog running is asked to notify police on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
