WHILE Father’s in Australia are waiting for their cards, breakfast in bed and at best a cold beer on September 3, other countries celebrate Father’s Day a bit differently.
1. Mexico
The Mexican people not only honour their fathers on the third Sunday in June every year, but they also look to father-like figures. There is an annual Father’s Day race called, “Carrera Día del Padre 21K Bosque de Tlalpan,” held in Mexico City.
2. Italy
The Italians honour their dads on the March 19, known as St. Joseph's Day, to commemorate San Guiseppe. The Italian name for Father's Day is 'Festa del Papa' and is celebrated with grand feast and fanfare over several days of festivities.
3. Germany
Father’s Day or Vatertag in German, is the one-day dads shake off their parental responsibilities and head off for adventure. Celebrated on the 40th day of Easter, Ascension Day, German men have a tradition of celebrating by organising hikes and other gatherings—and making sure to be well-supplied with food and alcohol.
4. Thailand
The Southeast Asian country celebrates mothers on the birthday of Queen Sirikit on Aug 12, and fathers on the birthday of King Bhumi- bol Adulyadej. The King gives an annual speech, while tradition has it that Thais give their fathers and grandfathers the Canna flower, which is considered to have a masculine association.
