The popular Katherine Christmas street parade has been cancelled.
It comes as blow to many schools and other community organisations who regularly support the event which was to have been held on Thursday, December 6.
The parade is believed to have involved about 2000 people last year – those participating in the parade, and those watching and supporting the shopkeepers who opened for late night shopping.
The parade had struck logistical problems in recent years finding a suitable route which satisfied authorities.
While traffic management costs have proven to be exorbitant, organisers found a sponsor this year.
There were early plans to switch it from Railway Terrace, where it had found a home the past few years, to First Street.
While hundreds of people took part in the parade in previous years, hundreds more took advantage of sidewalk food and open shops to visit Katherine Terrace as well.
For many, it was the most popular and happy community event of the year.
The town’s Carols by Candlelight is being held on December 8.
Parade and party organiser, the Chamber of Commerce’s Sue Jones, has been the mainstay of the event.
“I apologise for the late notice, but events happened which were outside my control,” she said.
