
The Katherine team has returned from the School Sport Australia Track and Field Championships held in Melbourne late last month.
The athletes had a training day in Darwin on November 21 followed by a team uniform presentation at Cazaly’s Club in Palmerston.
There were 22 athletes in the squad, mostly from Darwin and Palmerston, with four from Katherine, one from Nhulunbuy and one from Elliot.
NSW had the biggest team with 154 athletes.
The NT team collected one gold medal (200m) and 1 silver medal (shot putt) , both by Briseis Brittain from Darwin. Briseis also set an Australian record for the 200m.
Nelly competed in the 100m, 200, & long jump.
Lucas competed in the 100m, 200m – finished 15th fastest in Aust. in 200m.
Warren did the 100, 200m, long jump, shot put, discus.
Boyd ran the 100m.
Many of the athletes ran personal best times.
All athletes competed in the 4x100m relays.
On the final day, all states and territories divided their athletes into teams of 8 to compete in team challenges including vortex throwing, long jump and relays where points are awarded to each athlete which then is totalled to give the team an overall total.
The excursion day was to the MCG and the National Sports Museum.
At the MCG, the students got view the change rooms, the media room, the MCC Members’ area, indoor cricket training centre. The National Sports Museum had memorabilia many of Australian’s greatest sporting achievements.
The students were amazed by the performance of the athletes from the other states, particularly the training programs they had been doing.
