Well I remember attending my uncle's 50th birthday on the neighbouring farm.

My friends and I snuck a few bottles of beer from the party and had a fun time with a few sips each but I remember thinking how do you get to be that old?
To us back then, 50 was one step in the grave sort of thing.
Happy I have now climbed past that number comfortably, far enough passed that 50 is now considered quite young, well, youngish.
Then my father was telling me recently of a cousin who had died.
All of our conversations seem to be sprinkled with funerals, hospitals, nursing homes and such.
It wasn't the departed cousin we spoke about the most, although Nola Barker was a kindly soul, who was always extremely nice to me, but her older sister.
We figured she was 90 years or so.
"She would drive up to Wyche to see Nola," Dad said.
Driving from Nullawil to Wycheproof, home of the nearest hospital involves driving along the Calder Highway, about 16km.
Ninety years plus and still driving, and there's lot of trucks on the Calder, even though it's a remarkably straight drive.
In fact, part of the highway from Dumosa is the straightest stretch on the entire highway and a speed demon once came to race his truck along it to create a speed record, which I am pretty sure he did.
I also remember walking along one side of that length as well when my older brother had his hand out the window of the bus and someone shut the window on his arm.
When he withdrew his arm, his almost new watch slid off. Hence the family was sent back to search for it.
I'm sure we looked like dills walking alongside the highway.
Again, if memory serves me right, we found the broken remains.
But back to the subject of today, age.
I wish to alert the designers of some websites that some of us are old.
I was online the other day checking the Darwin Festival lineup and thought I would like to book to see comedian Tom Gleeson.
You have to register to make a booking of course.
Name, sex, email, bank details - that sort of thing.
It also wants to know your age, not quite sure why.
But to insert your age you have to click on the calendar, which skipped backwards at a month per click.
Listen mate, at almost 60 years, that's a lot of clicks.
You need to build in an override or a shortcut at least.
Obviously the festival does not appeal to me as the go-to demographic, at least it's not designed that way.
Plenty of things out there which get under the skin of us older folk.
PS: Gleeson performed on Wednesday night at the Darwin festival and he was tops.
Tales from the Top End appears each week in the Katherine Times.
