The Government promised 500 extra Aboriginal people would be employed in frontline service roles, such as teaching, nursing and policing, by 2026, to better reflect the NT population.

About 40 per cent of Northern Territory school students are Aboriginal.

The 2020 Teaching - Growing Our Future Scholarships provide successful applicants with up to $15,000 per year to complete an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in the Territory.

Eligible students must be enrolled either full time or part time in either the undergraduate Bachelor of Education or postgraduate Master of Teaching at Charles Darwin University in 2020.

This is the third time the scholarships have been offered. There are 20 scholarships to be awarded.

Applications close on Friday, November 29.

Education Minister Selena Uibo said: "The Government is investing to boost the number of Aboriginal people in frontline services and these scholarships will support aspiring teachers to obtain their qualifications.

"In our remote communities, Aboriginal teachers are seen as role models and leaders, not only within schools, but within the community.

"The Teaching - Growing Our Future scholarships offer our up and coming Aboriginal leaders support to realise their teaching dreams, while also offering a pathway for them to inspire the next generation.

"All Territory children deserve the best start in life and all students' education will be improved and strengthened by having more Aboriginal teachers in the classroom."
