Mayor Fay Miller told the council at its meeting on Tuesday night she was tired of council copping all the blame for the problem of stray dogs in the town.
She even fired back after a particularly nasty comment on a local community Facebook page, Mayor Miller revealed.
"Now there's been quite a fuss on Facebook of late about stray dogs roaming around in the evening, particularly around Katherine South and we've been copping a lot of flak for that online," she told council this week.
"We're taking the blame and i rarely do this but I got into the comments and told people that was unfair, that your dogs are your responsibility and the rangers aren't going to be out at 6, 7, 8pm catching everybody's dogs and bringing them home, owners take responsibility for their own dog."
Mayor Miller said some dog owners needed to change their ways.
"There's thing around Katherine about letting your dog out at 6pm for a run, just letting them out to roam free for a while.
"People are asking where are the rangers? The rangers work normal hours until 4 or 5pm, it is not their responsibility to go and look after your dogs being let out at night."
Council chief executive Ian Bodill said the council's rangers had impressed him in his early months in the top job.
"I've actually been very impressed with the rangers here, it seems they don't just go out and fine people but actually manage the issues, speak with people and communicate clearly about why rules are in place."
Mayor Miller agreed the rangers are doing their best.
"Yes, they're very good."
