Barkly Regional Council has stepped in to coordinate the response to the town's food crisis.
Council has identified a range of local suppliers who have filled the void to ensure the community has access to essential items during these difficult times.
The town's only supermarket has been forced to temporarily close because of the Sunday night fire.
The town's population is about 3000 people.
This includes:
- United Chemists increasing their orders for essential toiletries, sanitary products and domestic cleaning products,
- United Service station increasing their range of fruit and vegetables,
- Barkly Quality Butchers expecting a larger delivery, and;
- Most hotels and clubs having increased their supplies in anticipation for increased dining demand.
IGA continues to fit out their temporary site at the BP service station.
As part of these activities they are:
- prepping their shelves and stock,
- increasing the bread offerings in the BP store, and;
- have commenced trading in the dining area of the BP store with fruit and vegetable offerings.
If necessary residents can also order remote deliveries (bush orders) from IGA Northside Alice Springs. which is 500km away.
A transport company will need to be engaged to deliver the items. MSC transport (0497 115 263) is able to assist.
All remote Barkly communities have been urged to do their supermarket shopping at their local community stores to avoid strain on the current Tennant Creek supplies.
Julalikari CEO Sam Ashton and Julalikari board chair Linda Turner have assured Tennant Creek residents that temporary operations for the continued IGA services are already running from the Tennant Creek BP complex.
