A man approached a young girl as she was riding her bike along an alleyway behind Frangipanni Court about 9.30am.
The court is in Katherine East not far from the rear of the police station.
The man attempted to touch the girl inappropriately before she was able to escape and run home for help.
Police are calling for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward in relation to the incident.
The alleged offender is described as an Aboriginal male approximately 40 years old, 170cm tall with short black and grey hair, wearing red knee-length shorts and a dark shirt.
Police say the same man may have approached another woman in the Woolies carpark today.
