As the only division one winning entry nationally in the Lotto draw 4054, the man has been handed the entire $1 million prize.
While it has come at the rather inopportune time for travel, the man says he is already dusting off his passport and researching European holidays.
Alerted to the coveted win this morning by lottery officials, the man confessed he had been completely oblivious to his good fortune.
"I had no idea I had won anything. I've just turned on my phone and saw [the] missed calls," he said.
"I usually check my tickets every morning."
The avid player says he never misses a week, banking on the same numbers each time.
"I always use the same numbers. They are the birthdays of myself, my wife and my children," he said.
"It's great my System 8 entry gave me a bit of a bonus too with my other divisional wins," he said, in regards to the additional entry which scored him division three 12 times and division four 15 times, bolstering his total prize to $1,005,601.30.
With his new winnings, the Darwin man says he is "thrilled".
"I'm newly retired, just in the last year or so, so it's nice to know we'll be covered for my retirement." he said.
"As soon as we can, we'll go travelling. It's been a bit hard being retired but not being able to go anywhere.
"Once the borders open up, we'll head straight to Europe and make a big trip around."
The winning entry was purchased at Leanyer Newsagency, Shop 18, Hibiscus Shoppingtown, Corner Leanyer Drive and Vanderlin Drive, Leanyer.
