Something Different features unconventional portraits of a number of Territory icons, including of curator Kamahi Djordan King's alter ego Constantina Bush.
Mr King, who is also the Visual and Performing Arts Manager at GYRACC, said the exhibition's name came about after the pair connected over her 2019 Portrait of a Senior Territorian Award winning painting Paul and Elma.
"She came down for the Katherine prize and I love her work because I was one of the judges on the Senior Territorian Portrait Award and I actually chose her work to win.
"She introduced herself to me and I said...so how would you feel about having a solo exhibition here?'"
"She said, 'oh, nobody knows me' and I said 'just do something different, that can be the title.'"
The exhibition also features portraits of sports broadcaster Charlie King, Trevor 'Rubbish Warrior' Jenkins and comedian Amy Hetherington.
More news:
"She's been around for a long time but I think she's so underrated," Mr King said.
"She's amazing, the way she captures everything."
Ms Miles said she liked painting portraits of local people as a way to get to know them.
"I find different people fascinating and it's an excuse to get to know them and meet them," she said.
"How else would I have gotten to meet Trevor Jenkins and sat with him and had a chat?"
Artback NT's travelling exhibition Groundswell also opened at GYRACC on Saturday.
The exhibition, featuring over 20 works by Territory artists including Jacky Green, June Mills and Tarzan Jungle Queen, addresses the issue of Australia's diminishing water supply.
