NORTHERN Territory Police have arrested and charged a male and female following a large kava seizure in Katherine on April 26.

Detective Sergeant Ian Kennon from the Northern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk said that, just after 1am, police intercepted an unregistered Mitsubishi Pajero after they observed it travelling along the Stuart Highway with four unrestrained children in the back.
“Upon search of the vehicle, members located approximately 20 kilograms of kava, divided into 862 deal bags and a small quantity of cannabis,” he said.
“A 39-year-old male and a 26-year-old female were arrested and conveyed to Katherine watch house.”
The offenders were charged with possessing a trafficable quantity of kava, supplying a trafficable quantity of kava and possessing cannabis in a public place.
The male was charged with a range of additional offences, including driving an unsafe motor vehicle and disorderly behaviour.
The pair will appear in Katherine Magistrates Court on April 27.
