Mr McLennan will start early next month after relocating to Katherine from his current base in Melbourne.
He comes to the role with a strong background in rural and regional journalism, holding newsroom leadership roles across rural Victoria, including editor of The Guardian, Swan Hill, chief of staff at The Sunraysia Daily, Mildura and most recently senior journalist at the Weekly Times.
A holder of a national Walkley award for rural reporting, Mr McLennan has extensive knowledge of agribusiness and politics and a deep affection for rural and regional communities.
"I have spent my working life reporting the stories which matter right across country Australia," he said.
"I am very excited to have this opportunity to build a partnership with the people of Katherine and the NT at large so together we can enrich the community, allow it to prosper.
"It is our task and privilege to give readers, both in print and online, a news outlet of which they can be proud.
"Above all, the Katherine Times will continue to be a fierce advocate for Katherine and the region."
Group managing editor Brad Cooper said Mr McLennan was a welcome addition to the Queensland and Northern Territory operating group of Australian Community Media, publisher of Beaudesert Times, Jimboomba Times, Redland City Bulletin, Queensland Country Life, North Queensland Register and the North West Star in Mount Isa.
