New lighting towers and upgraded LED lighting are being installed at oval number two over the next few months.
The lights will create two sporting fields and rugby and soccer will be the initial beneficiaries of the upgraded lights which are expected to be suitable for training and games.
Oval number two is located between the Don Dale Centre and the tennis courts..
This oval is being transformed from one oval which had halogen lights to two ovals with 4 towers on each with LED lights.
Katherine Town Council operations manager David Moore said the new illuminated grounds would be able to have been designed to accommodate rugby and soccer.
Other sports including touch football and any other users wishing to book the grounds could make use of the lights and cooler evenings as well.
He said the council would have dual use goals installed in the new year.
“Currently there are 2000 plus registered users of the sports grounds ovals,” Mr Moore said.
He said LED light technology allows for training lights (100 LUX) and semi pro level (200 LUX)
The total project is estimated to be cost $450,000 funded by the Department of Sport and Recreation.
