Timber Creek, four hours south-west of Katherine, has a well founded reputation as one of the most scene spots to catch a barra in the NT.
The winners from the Easter weekend fishing contest on the Victoria River are enough to wet most people’s lips.
Timber Creek held another big Circle F Easter fishing competition during Easter which attracted many anglers.
It has become an annual pilgrimage for many anglers to make the long trip to the Victoria River for its prized barramundi.
New Katherine resident Jacob Moore won the hard luck competition of the Easter competition after a crocodile apparently interfered with his catch (see the picture below).
Having recently moved to Katherine from Qld and had never caught a barra.
At his first competition he hooked a good barra which out up a good fight and an impressive show.
But the mighty fish was lost less than a metre from the boat with only a bit of flesh on the hook to show for it. It was presumably taken by a croc as not another barra was seen for the rest of the weekend.
The 30th annual Big Horse Creek Barra Classic is on again in Timber Creek next (May Day) weekend, April 29 and 30 hosted by the Katherine Game Fishing Club.
There are over 20 prize catalogues with the largest barra collecting the $3500 cash prize. Nominations for adults are $150 and $50 for juniors and potty mullets.
Nomination forms can be found at Rod n Rifle, Furniture Discounts, Town n Country butchers and Katherine lock and key.
It is a fully catch and release event.
