The more than 70 members of the land council only hold two full council meetings in any year.
Housing Minister Gerry McCarthy and Agriculture and Mining Minister Ken Vowles are expected to address the council this morning.
One of the big issues expected to be discussed today is the ongoing permit free intertidal access arrangements under existing agreements relating to seven coastal areas in the NT.
The new arrangements follow the High Court’s 2008 Blue Mud Bay decision – in particular, access to and management of the Aboriginal-owned intertidal zone.
About half of the land in the NT has become Aboriginal land in addition to 85 percent of the coastline. A large proportion of the remaining land mass is subject to Native Title interests.
The Northern Land Council is an independent statutory authority of the Commonwealth.
It is responsible for assisting Aboriginal peoples in the Top End of the Northern Territory to acquire and manage their traditional lands and seas.
