The NT Government has given an extra quarter of a million dollars for Palmerston based community groups to deliver additional after-hours youth activities.
The government also funded “a range of new after-hours activities in Alice Springs this October school holidays to keep kids off the street and provide opportunities to get their lives on a better path”.
There does not appear to be any specific funding announcement for Katherine.
Katherine Times has attempted repeatedly today to gain a response from government and Katherine MLA Sandra Nelson about what is being done to engage Katherine youth during the holidays.
Katherine police today said they had boosted their patrols, anticipating a crime spike.
“Traditionally we see a spike in property crime during school holiday periods,” Acting Senior Sergeant Rick Magree said.
“Northern Territory Police will be out in force and taking active steps to minimise these incidents.”
Det. Sen. Sgt Mark Malogorski said Katherine police were being proactive.
“We are running additional patrols of the Katherine township to ensure schools, businesses and properties are secure,” Det. Sen. Sgt Malogorski said.
“We are putting extra people for the whole school holidays to deter offenders. It is working really well so far.”
A spokeswoman from the Katherine Public Library said there would be no programs these school holidays.
A spokesman from the Katherine YMCA said they would be holding one school holiday event at the pool on Friday.
