The fire started on land adjacent to the Katherine Town Council facility.
This caused a large amount of bushland at the site to burn, generating a lot of smoke.
NT Fire and Rescue Services attended and completed backburning to prevent further spread of the fire.
The fire is currently under control and is not expected to reach the tip face.
People in affected areas are advised to close their doors and windows and avoid the smoke by staying inside.
