Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Eva Lawler heralded Uber’s arrival as a win for Territorians, the economy and local jobs.
It is hoped the service will eventually be offered in Katherine.
The company joins Australian ride-sharing company Hi Oscar, which began operating in Darwin in February.
Last year legislative changes paved the way for ride-sharing which included slashing annual taxi license fees, while introducing a $1 levy to all commercial trips. These changes were implemented after extensive consultation with the taxi industry.
Uber drivers will be subject to the same safety regulations as other commercial passenger vehicle operators.
The app is scheduled to go live at 3pm and Ms Lawler is expected be the Territory’s inaugural Uber passenger.
Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Minister Eva Lawler said: “The Government made an election promise to bring ride-sharing here — today marks the delivery of the second ridesharing company to the NT.
“Our number one priority as a government is jobs for Territorians. Uber and Hi Oscar have delivered nearly 250 local jobs – 185 drivers with Hi Oscar and 50 with Uber – a number that will be boosted as more drivers become accredited.
“It is also great news for people living and visiting the Top End to have more options for getting around the city safely.”
Uber Queensland and NT state manager, Alex Golden said: "We’re excited to now offer people in Darwin a safe and affordable way to get around with the launch of the Uber app. Locals and visitors to Darwin will be able to request a ride at the touch of a button on their smartphone from 3pm today."
"Today’s launch is also a new way to make money for locals. Uber driver-partners have complete flexibility to drive as and when it suits them — and we see driver-partners fit Uber around their studies, other work and family responsibilities."
"We hope Uber will be embraced by locals and visitors to Darwin and we're looking forward to helping people move reliably around their city."
