People fearing for their personal safety and that of their property were turning to guard dogs, Shirley Crane told Katherine Town Council this week.
Mrs Crane said there had been explosion in the town’s dog population as a result, which had created dangers of their own.
Mayor Fay Miller said they would alert their rangers to the problem.
“I went past one house yard with six dogs in the yard, why would you need six dogs,” Mrs Crane said.
“None of them had collars, and I bet they weren’t registered.”
Mrs Crane said she had no problem with people wanting to protect their homes or businesses using dogs or any means possible, but questioned whether council was enforcing the town’s two-dog policy.
If a Katherine resident wants more than two dogs they have to apply for a licence, Mrs Crane was told.
She said the rise in dog numbers had simply made the town’s wandering dog problem worse.
