The Katherine River was below two metres deep at the railway bridge today.
It is a very unusual sight so deep into the wet season to find the river so low.
Katherine Times’ own picture archives show the river was 12 metres deep at this exact time last time and 14 metres at the same time in 2017.
Most of the action for this year’s two weak monsoon troughs so far this season have concentrated on northern Queesland with devastating results.
Katherine Town Council re-opened the Lowie this afternoon to vehicular traffic.
The pedestrian walkway remains closed.
Katherine has recorded almost 100mm so far this month with an historical average of 234mm for February.
The Bureau of Meteorology says the town can expect a succession of hot days, near February record temperatures of 38 degrees, and “possible thunderstorms”.
