The teams went head to head as part of the annual Anzac feature match at Tindal, with a women's match included for the first time.
While the crowd missed out on the loud and low rumble of hornets to signal the start of the Anzac clash - this year between Tindal and the Camels - those watching paused in silence for the traditional Anzac ceremony.
The Northern Warlpiri Swans made the first of their almost-11-hour journey from Lajamanu to take on the Katherine South Crocs.
Entering the season off the back of the community's successful local competition during the wet season, the team put Katherine South to the test, but lost 13.9 (87) - 7.7 (40).
The second year of the women's competition will see three teams battle it out over 10 games.
In a close game, Katherine Camels defeated Katherine South 3.1 (19) - 3.9 (27).
Ending the night, Tindal, which was left borrowing players from the opposing team to make up a side, was defeated by the Katherine Camels.
With the league growing and more communities involved this year, including three rounds to be played in Jilkminggan and Barunga, the year ahead is looking to be an exciting one.
The season will culminate with the grand final on September 21.
