More than 100 of the NT's top players have convened, some with hopes of making the NT representative team.
Based on a percentage of wins and losses, the top eight players will be selected for the team on Friday.
From there players have the chance to participate in the World Titles.
The long-running competition will see more than 300 games played at the Katherine Club across the five days.
"The competition is through the roof," president of the Katherine Eightball Association, Keegan Williams said.
"Once we start playing at 9am, we sometimes don't get out until midnight.
"It is both intense and exciting, but we do it because we love it."
For the Katherine team, the competition is something they have been working towards for a year.
Getting together a minimum of two nights per week to practice, the president of three years said the competition is the next step for players to represent the NT at the next Australian Championships.
Williams said it was an honour to host the competition which attracts players who have made it to the World Titles.
"To run such a competition in our town is a privilege, it is pretty amazing," he said.
"We get to showcase Katherine and all of the great things it has to offer.
"For a lot of our players it is the competition of the year."
The round-robin competition is held in the first week of June every year and follows the world two-shot rule.
Katherine will next host the competition in five years, as it moves through the NT.
