Katherine Town Council has agreed to pay for their removal as a matter of urgency after a fire in another pile of thousands of old tyres stored between the speedway and showgrounds back on Territory Day.
The NT Environment Protection Authority is continuing to investigate how the pile of tyres came to be stored in an unsecured location.
A spokesman for the EPA said the investigation was ongoing and no details could be released.
It is understood the investigation is also weighing up the warnings given to residents impacted by the toxic plume of smoke from the burning tyre piles.
Residents were told to stay inside, close windows and doors and reduce reverse cycle air conditioning.
No evacuation warnings were given because of the potential health hazard, the Katherine Times' understands.
The EPA said an authorised officer direction (AOD) was issued to Katherine Town Council last week "to address the clean-up of the burnt tyres".
The pile of tyres, stretching for about 300 metres, was covered up by earth to smother the fire, but the charred remains are still buried.
"KTC staff have advised they are seeking quotations from experienced consultants to guide the clean-up and remediation to comply with the AOD.
"Quotations should be received within the week," the EPA spokesman said.
Council last night voted to engage a licenced tyre transporter to remove all of their current tyre stockpile at the Katherine waste management centre.
The meeting was told the cost of the removal of those tyres could be as much as $100,000.
