A group of protesters attempt to block a truck from travelling along the Stuart Highway this morning.

Using seven vehicles, the protesters set up a wall of cars to block the truck while it was at the heavy vehicle weighbridge just south-west of town.

The protesters claimed they had information the truck was carrying equipment for fracking of exploratory wells in the Beetaloo Basin, near Daly Waters.

Santos and Origin Energy has received legal approvals to resume exploration for onshore shale gas now the NT Government has raised its moratorium.

A third company, Empire Energy, is now seeking its own approvals to drill wells near Borroloola.

A "community action workshop" was held in Katherine on Saturday, August 3 where the Katherine Times understands some anti-fracking forces called for more militant action after years of peaceful protest.

The blocking of trucks was discussed at this workshop, we have been told.

Katherine High students were also observed attending today's protest with their parents.

"We are here to let them know we still care even if it is going ahead," Silvana Goldbach-Eggert said.

"This is far more important than school. This is our future."

The Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association has been contacted for comment.

Some protesters said they were contacted by police today following the protest.
