About 3600km by road or four hours by plane from Darwin - Sydney's Federal Court is a very long way from this crossroads in the NT outback.
Justice Michael Lee will hear all three class actions from Katherine (Shine Lawyers), Williamtown (Dentons) and Oakey (Shine Lawyers) at the same time.
The initial trial is scheduled to start on April 1, 2020.
While openly admitting fault in allowing dangerous chemicals to leak from their bases, the Defence Department is contesting the claim that PFAS contamination caused property values in each area to drop.
Defence is said to have put aside $53 million of taxpayers' money to fight the case.
Hundreds of Katherine residents, and lately the Katherine Town Council, have signed up to the court action but it is unlikely anyone will travel to Sydney to hear the case.
There is a chance there will be an online broadcast from the trial.
There is also a strong possibility the court will come to Katherine to have at the town's proximity to the Tindal RAAF Base.
Katherine residents are not paying Shine Lawyers.
The many lawyers who will gather around the Bar table are being paid by litigation funder IMF Bentham.
The legal action operates on a no win, no fee basis.
If they don't win, they don't get paid.
Unfortunately neither will Katherine.
