A number of syringes have been discovered during a routine cleaning of the Katherine Cemetery this month.

The discarded syringes were found by council workers while works were being carried out to excavate five grave sites, as well to maintain the grounds.
The cemetery is located near the Katherine Hospital, about five kilometres from the centre of town, and on the banks of the Katherine River.
Many long-term residents are buried there, as well as Constable William Condon, a police officer remembered each year during the National Police Remembrance Day ceremony in Katherine.
Despite the find, a Katherine Town Council spokeswoman said discarded syringes were not a common occurrence.
"I spoke to the Depot manager regarding the syringes," the spokeswoman said, "she said it is quite rare for this to occur, saying she would collect maybe one or two a year."
The Katherine Cemetary, established in 1934 and known to some as the pioneer's cemetery, is a draw card for many interested in stories of early life and hardships in Katherine.
