It's still too early to crystal ball whether the heat will continue until Christmas but the 40 degree days are set to continue for the next seven days at least.
Fortunately there was some rain, along with a power outage, across the town yesterday afternoon.
Tindal recorded 2.4mm but in Katherine the falls generally ranged to 5mm.
Weather analysts at the Bureau of Meteorology say the Tindal weather station has this week recorded its its 40th day of 40°C or more this year.
The previous annual record was only half that with 20 days in a year set back in 2013.
That record run is set to continue with 40 plus degree days right through until next Thursday.
The chance of more thunderstorms like yesterday will continue as well.
The December heatwave comes on top of the record run of heat in November as well.
The experts' predictions of the late start to the wet season have unfortunately proven to be correct.
